Later on, Selina returned to Ted, and asked him to train her in the use of a bullwhip. Stan began to berate Holly, causing Bruce to attack the pimp before Selina was knocked out when trying to protect Holly. While training, Selina met Bruce Wayne when walking through the East End with Holly, and rejected her advances. Detective George Flannery visited her, and told her of Ted Grant, a man who could teach her to fight and defend herself. After being viciously beaten by a pimp named Stan, she passed our near the Immaculate Virgin Mission, and was sent to the hospital. When the carnival owner died in a tragic accident, Selina decided to go to the streets of Gotham and become a thief.īecoming a petty thief, Selina found herself working as a prostitute in the East End to get by, and watched over Holly Robinson, an underage girl. She eventually escaped from the center and joined a carnival circus group outside of Gotham City, and learned contortionism, acrobatics, magic, trickery and improved her pick pocketing skills. Selina was separated from Maggie when she was sent to the Sprang Hall Juvenile Detention Center, which was an abusive state home for orphans and delinquents. Maria later committed suicide and Brian was abusive, and later drank himself to death soon after. Selina Kyle is the daughter of Brian and Maria Kyle, and the older sister to Maggie Kyle, and her childhood was defined by tragedy. She was created by the late Bill Finger and the late Bob Kane, and she first appeared in Batman # 1 in spring of 1940. She also became a member of the Birds of Prey, the Outsiders, and later the Justice League of America. Catwoman would become an on and off ally of the Dark Knight, and later his love-interest. Because of his more or less harmless methods, Batman allows her to slip through the roots. She spent most of her life training herself to be a professional thief, stealing only high-level targets instead of petty assaults. Since Selina Kyle's origins are obscure, she can also be portrayed as based in Gotham's red light district, implying a history of prostitution. No one gives a damn.Ĭatwoman (real name: Selina Kyle) is a fictional character in DC comics and its universe, and an anti-heroine and Batman's main love interest and on and off enemy and ally.Īlthough typically thought and reproduced as a villain, Catwoman repeatedly in a heroic capacity, and, in the most modern comics, is a hero as often as a villain, and even when a villain shows consistent moral standards and far more restrictions and scruples than any of Batman's other great enemies. Let Gotham rot.as long as it rots quietly. So what if people die? What if villains ruin their live? What if they're all slaves kept in fear? None of it matters. They just see Gotham as a flood of chaos. If we were, surely we'd know better than to care about anything.Įveryone feels that way. Anything they deem significant in a life that's not. Some people anchor themselves to something larger. They spend their lives in breathless pursuit of meaningless goals, hoping to forget everything they know about their own mortality. Some people find such reminders disconcerting. Every now and then life likes to reiterate that little point. But Batman: Gotham by Gaslight utilizes it to effectively throw the Dark Knight into a genuinely good period-piece horror movie plot, forcing him to contend with a genre his stories often touch upon while rarely fully embracing in outside media. When people try to kill me, I don't hop in bed with them a tick later. Thanks to his genius and inventions, Batman can usually overcome any threat - rendering most suspense for naught. Batman: Gotham by Gaslight leans into suspense in a way that most Batman films simply don't. The movie doesn't try to downplay the brutality of Jack the Ripper's actions, with his attacks on the women of Gotham ultimately being tweaked to come with some truly unsettling motivation. The film's Arkham lacks any of the color or personality of other incarnations, instead being filled with almost animalistic inmates who, at one point, rip a man to pieces on-screen. This is good because Batman: Gotham by Gaslight has some truly unsettling and scary elements. By reducing Batman's scope but maintaining his skill, he becomes the ideal horror story protagonist. This leaves Batman uniquely weakened, making any threat a more dangerous one - and allows the movie's more frightening elements to play out more effectively. This is a Batman with far fewer gadgets, operating in a time period when many of the technologies and techniques taken for granted in the present are completely absent from his arsenal. The film does a good job of portraying a Batman who is far more cerebral than other cinematic takes on the character.
